Who is St. Anthony of Padua?
While most Catholics know about St. Anthony, we still have some that might have just heard his name a few times and some others who have no idea who he is. St. Anthony of Padua is one of the most popular Saints in history. He was born Fernando Martins in Lisbon, Portugal into a very wealthy family in the year 1195 A.D. At the age of 15, he was sent to the Abbey of Santa Cruz in Coimbra (the Capital of Portugal at that time) where he learnt Theology and Latin and later, was ordained. He eventually moved to a new hermitage outside of Coimbra dedicated to St. Anthony of Egypt, where he changed his name to “Anthony”. That was how his name came about. Read St. Anthony of Padua to know much more about him.
Why was he made Doctor of The Church?
He was so knowledgeable about the teachings of Christ and other things as he always studied. People knew him as a great teacher as his teachings of Christ were so simple, clear and well explained that even the most uneducated could understand him and repent. Read Aquinas Prayer For Academic Success . This is why he was made Doctor of The Church by Pope Pius XII. He once gave an extremely intelligent homily in the hermitage of San Paulo (where he was staying at that time) which was said to have reached the ears of so many people, even St. Francis of Assissi. This was how they both became good friends.
St. Anthony, Patron of Lost Items
Anthony was made Patron Saint of lost items because, as I’m sure you’re already guessing, he was able to retrieve a stolen item from someone. A novice once decided to leave the hermitage and stole a book Anthony really valued which contained Psalms, notes and comments. On realizing it was missing, Anthony prayed for it to be returned. And yes, it was indeed! The novice returned to the Order as well. So, it is safe to see that he not only returned a missing object but also, a lost soul. St. Anthony performed a lot of miracles, one of which was when he tried to preach the gospel to heretics but they wouldn’t listen, so he went over to a river and began preaching to the fish. Miraculously, all the fish started gathering before him. St. Anthony performed so many miracles while on earth and after. See Unfailingly Prayer To St Anthony_ Performer Of Miracles . A lot of people have prayed to him and miraculously recovered stolen items or missing items and persons. So, whatever it is that you’ve been searching for, call on St. Anthony and he will help you.
