Prayer for Workers

Listen to this article

As workers who go out daily, passing through hurdles, struggles and challenges to earn a living, it is so draining physically as well as mentally. Not to talk of our daily struggle to make improvements, meet certain standards or obtain promotions at our workplaces, and it gets even worse when we’re not able to meet those expectations. It doesn’t stop there, the anxieties of being a worker goes up to a whole new dimension when talking about the pressures we face from those who depend on us for survival; the ones whom we have the responsibility of feeding, clothing and providing shelter for. A lot of people feel like a failure when they can’t seem to meet up to their responsibilities.

Amidst all these, it is very important we wind down, go to God who is in charge of our lives to commit our business dealings into His hands. Same way you’re responsible the wellbeing of those in your care, God is responsible for your wellbeing

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” (Matt 6:26).

Whatever it may be, your aspirations, visions, challenges, take them all to God trusting that He will come to your aid: “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?” (Matt 7:9)

This prayer to St. Joseph was composed by Pope St. Pius X for all workers. St. Joseph is the patron Saint of workers and those seeking for employment. Say this prayer today:

“O Glorious Saint Joseph, model of all those who are devoted to labor, obtain for me the grace to work in a spirit of penance for the expiation of my many sins;

to work conscientiously, putting the call of duty above my natural inclinations; to work with thankfulness and joy, considering it an honor to employ and develop by means of labor the gifts received from God;

to work with order, peace, moderation and patience, never shrinking from weariness and trials; to work above all with purity of intention and detachment from self, keeping unceasingly before my eyes death and the account that I must give of time lost, talents unused, good omitted, and vain complacency in success, so fatal to the work of God.

All for Jesus, all through Mary, all after thy example, O Patriarch, Saint Joseph. Such shall be my watch-word in life and in death. Amen”.

Although, it is God’s will that man works very hard in order to make a living “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Gen 3:19), it is also God’s promise that we reap the fruits of our labour; “You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be blessed” (pslm 128:2).
