Presented here is the renowned final homily delivered by Fr. Mark Beard, a poignant address given just three days before his passing.
Father Mark Bryan Beard, known to many as a devoted son, brother, uncle, Pastor, and friend, left this world on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at the age of 62. A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he was proud of his roots and the community that shaped him.
Father Beard’s educational journey led him to obtain a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Louisiana State University, followed by a Master’s in Divinity (M.Div) from Notre Dame Seminary. Additionally, he earned a certification in Spirituality (Spiritual Direction) and Divinity, which fueled his spiritual path.
His professional life was diverse, having spent several years working in his family’s businesses, Beard Engineering and United Industries. These firms were focused on the manufacturing and engineering of wastewater equipment, an industry where Father Beard made a notable contribution by receiving a U.S. Patent for inventing a Turbulence Control System.
The year 2000 marked a turning point in his life when a trip to Medjugorje sparked thoughts of the priesthood. After four years of contemplation, he entered Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2004. His dedication culminated in his ordination as a priest of the Diocese of Baton Rouge on May 30, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Cathedral.
Father Beard’s pastoral journey took him to various locations, serving as Associate Pastor at Most Sacred Heart-Gramercy, St. Joseph-Paulina, St. Michael the Archangel-Convent, and Our Lady of Prompt Succor Chapel-Lutcher for two years. His leadership and dedication were particularly evident during his twelve-year tenure as the pastor of St. Helena Catholic Church in Amite, Louisiana. There, he established a picturesque campus that became a hub for tours and retreats.
In addition to his responsibilities at St. Helena, Father Beard took on the role of administrator at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Retreat Center in Osyka, Mississippi, over the last two and a half years.
His life was marked by love, faith, and service, and his impact will be fondly remembered by those who were fortunate enough to know him.
